Amnesty asks students to Live and Let Live

Through its “Live and Let Live” campaign, Northwood’s Amnesty International Club is sending a message of support to those who are fighting to overturn Proposition 8, a measure to legally define marriage as the union between a man and woman.
Club members were around the Oak Tree from Tuesday, Feb. 16 to Thursday, Feb. 19 with music, posters and a table at which students could sign thank-you letters to both the plaintiffs and lawyers fighting Prop 8 in a federal district court. Students also made rainbow-colored, beaded jewelry at the table to show support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights.

Amnesty International, an organization that seeks to defend human rights globally, believes that laws banning same-sex marriage are unconstitutional and contribute to discrimination against same-sex relationships, denying some couples the fundamental rights of marriage,  housing and social security. Amnesty members hope that the “Live and Let Live Campaign” will make students aware of Amnesty’s position and offer them a way to encourage the opposers of Prop 8.

The campaign has extended its campaign an extra week to continue to raise awareness of its humanitarian stance on Prop 8.
