Northwood Hosts its First 5K Run/Walk
Northwood’s first annual Timberwolf 5K Run/Walk was held on campus on Feb. 20, raising approximately $20,000 from nearly 1,000 participants. for Northwood sports team. School athletes, teachers, parents and runners from all over Orange County participated.
Starting at 8 a.m., participants in the race ran or walked from the school parking lot to Wolf Trail to Orchard Hills and back to the campus. Approximately 750 people attended the event. Attendees included serious runners, who came to improve their time, and casual walkers, who came to simply support the school.
“Even though the course was challenging because I had to run up the hills, crossing the finish line was satisfying,” said tennis player Eric Viloria, a junior .
Besides the runners or walkers in the race, many sponsors and volunteers came to support Northwood’s fundraiser. Some clubs that volunteered at the event include Red Cross, Key Club, Lance’s Team, and Pink Ribbon. Club members were in charge of setting up the course, giving water to tiring runners on the course, and making sure that the 5K ran smoothly. Various clubs and sponsors set up booths in the gym to provide refreshments for the runners after the race. Other clubs were even able to spread awareness about their upcoming events.
“The 5K was successful because we were able to publicize about the blood drive, which allowed for more people to sign up to donate,” said senior Allison Huang, Red Cross president.
Adding on the festivities, the band, The Impulse, was playing in the gym while the runners received goodie bags from the sponsors. Overall, the 5K seemed to be a success due to the high number of people who participated in the event, either by running or walking in the race, or volunteering around the course. Northwood athletes and club members hope that the school will host another race next year to further support the athletic department and also allow for the Northwood community to come together and show school spirit.
