The ASB Blog: Homecoming Deco Day

I was sweating from places I didn’t even know I could sweat. Sunday, Sept. 26 was so hot that we could have grilled steaks on the concrete by the oak. But still, every member of Northwood’s ASB and class councils was up and ready to go by 10 a.m. to school for “Deco Day.”

Some people may not know exactly the type of hard work that goes into decorating the school for homecoming week, but ASB sure does. Preparation began in the summer, when class councils and ASB convened to plan what types of decorations and attractions will be placed all over the school. Class presidents were allotted a specific budget to decorate a certain area of the school (e.g. juniors were given the 900 Building). We spent time picking out props at a RWB (a local prop warehouse) and organizing our councils together to construct various
decorations.

Then, there is the actual Deco Day: We hauled heavy props, hung foam boards, cut cardboard, laminated papers and ran around like crazy people for multiple hours. Occasionally, a water fight would break out, and we’d relax a little and cool down, too. My favorite part was when we laid on our backs and stared up at the sky in a food coma after our lunch break.

When it was all finally over, the moment when we stepped back and took a look at our creation was fantastic.

As the junior class president, perhaps I am a bit biased when it comes to choosing which class did the best job with their section. Actually, let’s be honest: I am very biased. But still, the junior class council has gotten several positive comments thus far on everything from our placard that boldly reads “Ocean Commotion” to our 8 ft shark.

While the process leading up to Deco Day has been a lot of work with all the planning, painting and purchasing, the point of it all is to give students and faculty and students the feeling that an educational institution has been transformed into a wonderland. And seeing all the hard work and dedication that day coming from so many members of the student body was unifying and inspiring.

I wouldn’t be lying if I said once Homecoming week is over, I will probably want to do it over again. But just not on a day that feels like my face is going to melt off.
