“How are you?” “Where is the 900 building?” “Am I going the right direction?” “Where is Room 1211?” “I am so confused!”

           Parents of students at Northwood High School attended Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. During the short passing periods, parents hurried to try to find their children’s classes to listen to the teachers’ curriculum.
           “It was really confusing trying to find my way to my daughter’s classes, but I really enjoyed listening to the teachers explain their curriculum and some tips,” said parent Imelda Etemadieh.
           Each period starting from period one lasted 10 minutes long. During that short time, teachers explained their goals for this year and the expectations of the class, while answering any questions from curious parents.
           “It was really helpful to hear what is expected of the courses. I like introducing myself to the teachers. Sitting in the classrooms makes me feel like I am a part of my daughter’s life,” said parent Pam Jemelian.
           Dressed in all black, the Muse Club performed many songs, including “Clocks” by Coldplay, next to the Oak Tree to provide some entertainment for the parents as they went to the classes.
           “It is really fun playing these songs. We barely practiced any of these songs but that exuberant feeling makes this a really fun and exciting experience,” said junior Daniel Chae.
           The school provided snacks such as brownies and drinks such as water and coffee for the parents. ASB and Cheer were at the school, giving directions to the lost parents and providing snacks. Assistant principal Saul Gleser, a volunteer, made sure to give out bottles of water to passing students, teachers or parents.
           “Watching these parents is like watching freshmen on their first day of school. They are all stressed and sprinting off to the classrooms. It is fun to watch,” said Gleser.

Have a particular interest or activity you want to pursue at school? Why not start a new club? From MUN to Environmental Club and from All Throughout Asia to Amnesty International, Northwood’s clubs provide a great atmosphere for students to pursue new talents, explore different cultures and develop their perspectives on many issues.

“At this point we have the same club list that we had at the end of last year, as clubs are still updating their information,” said ASB adviser Sandy Banks. “The finalized club list for the year will be out in October when all existing clubs have had some time to update their information and new clubs have been approved. We will be selecting students for the Club Approval Board, as we did last year, to help my clubs commissioners with the decision to approve clubs.”

Prospective club presidents must collect 10 student signatures from students who approve the club’s goals. The club also must have a faculty advisor and a constitution detailing the club’s activities, elections and budget plans.

The current club application can be found on NorthwoodHigh.org. Applications are due this Friday, Sept. 17. Students can email northwoodclubs@gmail.com for more information.

We need your group’s help with filling the following volunteer committees!

· Registration: 5:30 am-8am (at least 25 volunteers needed)
· Parking lot direction: 5:15 am-8 am (at least 15 volunteers needed)
· Course set up: 5 am- 6 am (at least 20 volunteers needed)
· Course security: 7:30 am-9:30 am (at least 20 volunteers needed)
· Clean up – off campus course: 8:30 am- 9:30 am(at least 25 volunteers needed)
· Clean up – on campus event area/course: 9:30 am – 11:30 am(at least 25 volunteers needed)
· Results/Awards: 8:30 am-10 am (at least 15 volunteers needed)

If your club commits at least 10 members to one of the above areas, you will be allowed to set up your
info/fundraising table at the end of the race. You all must work in the same committee together as a club!

All volunteers need to check in with the Volunteer Coordinator in the NHS gym at the assigned times above.
All volunteers will have their community service forms validated at the event!
